Experiments and simulations of low Re sphere wakes with and without stratification

چکیده
Near wakes behind a sphere in both homogeneous and linearly stratified background were studied numerically and experimentally at Reynolds number Re ≤ 1000, Froude number Fr ≥ 0.5. In a homogeneous fluid, the structural transitions with increasing Re are consistent with previous studies. The stratified results from simulations and experiments are in good agreement. Stratified wakes undergo similar transitions with decreasing Fr for Re in current range, except that similar transitions occur at larger Re as Fr decreases, thus making the wake structure at high Re, low Fr similar to that at low Re, high Fr.

Interactions of the wakes of two spheres placed side by side
The periodic coupled wakes of two spheres, placed side by side in a uniform stream at low Reynolds numbers, are studied experimentally and by Direct Numerical Simulations. Distinctly different regimes of interaction are observed, depending on the separation distance between the spheres. For touching spheres, a single wake is found. At very small separations, it is shown through numerical simula...
متن کاملStratified Wake Behind an Accelerating Hydrofoil
Wakes of towed and self-propelled bodies moving in stably stratified flows are of relevance to environmental and ocean engineering applications. To date, the majority of studies focused on the wakes of spheres and cylinders in stratified flows. Stable stratification modulates the wake dynamics, leading to a significantly different flow compared to non-stratified wakes. The wakes of spheres and ...
متن کاملRainfall-enhanced blooming in typhoon wakes
Strong phytoplankton blooming in tropical-cyclone (TC) wakes over the oligotrophic oceans potentially contributes to long-term changes in global biogeochemical cycles. Yet blooming has traditionally been discussed using anecdotal events and its biophysical mechanics remain poorly understood. Here we identify dominant blooming patterns using 16 years of ocean-color data in the wakes of 141 typho...
متن کاملNumerical Study of a Descending Sphere in a Low Reynolds Number Strongly Stratified Fluid
The flow generated by a sphere descending uniformly in a linearly stratified diffusive fluid is investigated numerically for different Reynolds (Re) and Froude (F ) numbers. The parameters used for the simulations were 10 ≤ Re ≤ 10 and 10 ≤ F ≤ 10, keeping the Schmidt number, Sc (= 700, typical of sea water) fixed. The results demonstrate drag dependence on viscosity and stratification, suggest...
متن کاملReynolds number effects in stratified turbulent wakes
We report large-eddy simulations of the turbulent wake of a towed-sphere of diameter D at speed U in a linearly stratified Boussinesq fluid with buoyancy frequency N . These simulations are performed using a spectral-multidomain-penalty-method-based incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for Re ≡ UD/ν ∈ {5 × 10, 10, 4 × 10} and Fr ≡ 2U/(ND) ∈ {4, 16, 64}. Increasingly richer turbulent fine structu...
